EURO 2016 – GROUP C

NORTHERN IRELAND v GERMANY

On Tuesday evening, Northern Ireland will once again try to play their game, keeping the play rigid and look to frustrate the Germans.  O’Neill has no reason to alter the team that defeated Ukraine 2-0 last time out, which means the inexperienced striker Conor Washington may keep his place ahead of top scorer in qualification, Kyle Lafferty, who was ineffective and isolated in the first game against Poland.

The Germans could still find themselves finishing in third place so I don’t imagine Joachim Low will rest many of his stars. Low has already previous promised to deliver top spot in the group. He has also bristled at suggestions his team lacks leaders, correctly pointing out that the same criticism was levelled at his World Cup-winning side two summers ago.

In this game, I see nothing but a Germany win but in all honesty they have not set the tournament alight and were fortunate to achieve a goalless draw against Poland last week. IOn the head-to-head, Germany have won the last four meetings with Northern Ireland and scored at least three goals in each of those matches, however I see this being tighter.

O’Neill has moulded the Northern Irish side into a tight ship and they have not conceded a single first-half goal since achieving qualification. So let’s go with a draw at half-time with Germany pressuring in the second half to gain the victory.

If you’re betting… good luck!
