Another great night of fights lined-up, this time in Canada as the UFC Fight Night 89 embarks on Ottawa. Will Burns returns with his best bets for the show.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT 89
TD Place Arena, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
RORY MacDONALD (18-3) vs.
STEPHEN THOMPSON (12-1)
We start off in the main event in what should be a cracking fight as MacDonald takes on Thompson and even though the Canadian has the home crowd advantage, I am predicting ‘The Wonderboy’ to come out on top.
Thompson comes into this bout as the small favourite 4/5 at Bet365 and if he can keep this fight on the feet, I see this bet being a must for our slips this weekend.
Thompson is a significantly better striker than MacDonald and which is proven by an incredible undefeated Pro Kickboxing record of 57-0. MacDonald can take a hit, and has great heart but fights with his hands low and barely evades strikes. If Thompson cannot knock Rory out, he will definitely outscore him.
The only way I see this bet failing is if MacDonald can wrestle Thompson down to ground, however I don’t envisage this happening. Thompson has demonstrated excellent takedown defence throughout his career and does a great job of scrambling back to his feet when he does get taken down.
If MacDonald attempts the takedown and this is rejected by Thompson, this will frustrate him as he struggles to make adjustments when his gameplan is not is going to plan. Rory will quickly abandon the takedowns if he cannot complete them. Now don’t get me wrong, MacDonald has a high level ground techniques and some strong wrestling, although he rarely goes to it in his fights.
I see nothing but a ‘Wonderboy’ win here and I think he could get an early finish (187/100 at Bet365) before the bell rings at the end of Round Five.
