EURO 2016 – GROUP C

GERMANY v UKRAINE

Germany enter the tournament as second favourites as everyone knows that Die Nationalmannschaft are always there or thereabouts at the competitions end. However, this opening encounter against a resilient Ukraine side could be a tricky one, especially as Joachim Low is facing a mini defensive crisis due to injuries.

Mats Hummels will not feature until at least the third group game after travelling to France carrying a calf injury and central defensive partner Jerome Boateng is nursing a knock. If Boateng fails to recover in time then Benedikt Höwedes and Shkodran Mustafi could find themselves starting at the heart of the defence. To provide protection to the makeshift back four, Julian Weigl could be deployed in the anchor role.

Meanwhile, head coach Low boasts an enviable attack and midfield, one which can overrun any team in the competition on their day.

Ukraine’s strength will be on the counter utilising wingers Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka to punish the Germans. The Ukrainians come into the tournament in good form, winning nine of their last 13 matches, including their last four. Their only defeat in that time came in the form of a 1-0 defeat against Spain.

Germany are unbeaten in their five previous clashes with Ukraine, but three of those have ended tied. The current world champions with Sami Khedira, Toni Kroos, Mario Gotze, Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Mario Gomez should have enough to overcome Ukraine, although I do not think it will be convincing. I do not see much value in this match at time of writing, so small stakes on the tip below. If I see any additional bets nearer to kick off be sure to check out our Twitter timeline.

If you’re betting… good luck!

TIP: Correct Score – Germany 2-1 Ukraine (9.00 at BetVictor)
